Preparing for Cold & Flu Season

Here are some tips on how to stop a cold before it starts:
    Support your immune system.
Preventing a cold begins with your immune system. Drinking fluids, eating a balanced diet, and snacking on yogurt may help your body prepare for and potentially even prevent a cold.
    Avoid Contact.
Common cold prevention is sometimes as simple as avoiding people who have a cold, especially during the first 2-3 days that symptoms like a sore throat appear.
    Wash your hands.
A great way to help prevent a cold is to frequently wash your hands for 20 seconds (or hum "Happy Birthday" twice). By targeting how germs spread, you can reduce your chance of getting a cold by about 20%.
Don't touch your eyes or nose.
Keep your fingers away from your eyes and nose to avoid spreading germs. A single gram of bacteria can contain 1 trillion germs.

While it’s possible to get the flu year-round, the fall and winter months are prime flu season (and staying indoors makes it even easier to pass illnesses on to the people you love). With the right plan, you can help avoid the flu as best as possible and be prepped if it does hit your home.
    First, practice healthy habits.
Start with a flu shot, which can reduce your risk of the flu. Ask your doctor for more details.
Keep strong with a routine that keeps your body in peak performance, like regular exercise, a balanced diet, healthy sleep and limiting your stress levels. Talk to your doctor before beginning or revising any exercise regimen.
Keep it clean and wash both your hands and surfaces regularly. Disinfectant is your friend!
    Then, be prepared.
Stock up on staples such as fluids (juice, tea and canned soups are great), tissues and over-the-counter medication. You won’t want to head out to the store when you’re under the weather.

Most importantly, take some time off. It is important if you are sick with the flu to stay home from work or school to prevent further spreading of the flu to others. The flu can last longer than a cold and you’ll need to recuperate. You’ll be back on your feet soon enough.
    Cold & Flu

    Stage I: Onset
It’s roughly 1-3 days since you came into contact with a cold virus and your body is starting to show mild symptoms like mild fatigue, runny or stuffy nose, and a sore throat. Even though you’re busy, try not to ignore these warning signs! Get ample rest and stay especially well hydrated.

    Stage II: Progression
Your cold is really settling in, as is the cough and congestion. Now’s the time to make a full on TLC Kit stocked with chicken soup, tea, honey, cough drops, soft tissues and lip balm. Zinc is a staple of a balanced and healthy immune system, so stock up on zinc-rich foods like eggs, garbanzo beans, pumpkin seeds and whole grains.

    Stage III: Peak
Your cold is in full swing and you’re feeling knocked out. Body aches and a low-grade fever are normal, but double up on your liquids - water, broth and juices - to stay hydrated. To relieve congestion and sinus pressure, use hot, steamy showers and humidifiers and consider an over-the-counter nasal decongestant.

    Stage IV: Remission
As your fever breaks and your aches start to subside, you know you’ve turned the corner toward wellness. As you gain back your strength, take the time to nix persistent germs by disinfecting surfaces in your home, car and office. Throw all bedding and clothes into the wash for a good scrubbing, and don’t forget to sterilize personal items like toothbrushes and cell phones that could also harbor and spread germs.

    Stage V: Recovery
Finally, you’re on your feet and feeling back to normal! Treat any minor, lingering symptoms like a cough or runny nose, with the appropriate over-the-counter medicine and stick to an especially healthy, balanced diet as your body reboots.

Remember, cold weather isn’t the source of a cold – hence many of us come down with it in the summer, too! Rather, viruses transmitted through minuscule droplets are the cause. So the best prevention method is to disinfect the spaces around you regularly and wash hands for a full 20 seconds at least five times a day.
